Phrasr

Phrasr is a free online tool that is SO cool to use. It literally takes minutes to create a slideshow for any phrase using pictures from Flikr's website, chosen by the user, to represent each word of your phrase. The user's imagination is the only limitation. They say a picture is worth 1000 words...

I created one for a saying that I like and have heard said many different ways.

Pros:
  • Easy to use
  • Any phrase can be used
  • Can help students who need visual representations of words
  • Large database of pictures to choose from
  • Very useful in any subject to help cement meaning of difficult vocabulary words and/or concepts

Cons:
  • Pictures cannot be blocked so students may see inappropriate pictures
  • Any phrase can be used so students may say inappropriate things
  • Once published it is visible in the archive to all
  • Students may focus on picture and not on the words so they miss part of the point

I made the example above in less than 5 minutes. I showed in to a student in my class to get his opinion and he really liked it. I can't wait to use it in Social Studies to help connect some of the cultural and social issues because often students don't grasp the importance of things that happened years ago or that are happening on the other side of the world. It may also work well in Math to help students remember order of operations or other step-by-step instructions that have to be followed in order.
